Insomnia, commonly referred as sleep deprivation or sleeplessness is actually a disorder. The main reasons for Insomnia is poor quality sleep. Young Adults tend to suffer with poor quality sleep or too little to no sleep for several days. Besides, they may not feel fresh and energetic once they wake up. This disorder can cause sleepiness or extreme tiredness during the day time due to lack of sleep. Insomnia itself is referred as a sign or symptom of few health maladies. Signs of insomnia are often found in older women, in the age groups of 50 years and above.

Initial/Common Signs of Insomnia

The two major signs of insomnia are inability to fall sleep or inability to enjoy sound sleep, which results with deprived sleep. The other initial signs of insomnia include the following:

  • Staying several hours without sleep
  • Cannot stress yourself enough to go to sleep
  • Poor quality sleep i.e. constantly interrupted sleep
  • Waking up in the midnight and spending the rest of the night without sleep
  • Short duration sleep
  • Find it difficult to return to sleep once your sleep is interrupted
  • Staying awake all the night
  • Feeling tired in the morning as if you had no sleep at all
  • Constant mood swings when you try to fall asleep
  • Fall asleep when you sit or work, but remain sleepless when you go to bed

Effects of insomnia

The effects of sleep deprivation often reflect on the daily activities. Restlessness and feeling exhausted is generally an associated sign of insomnia caused due to sleep deprivation. Especially, if you feel totally exhausted the entire day. In addition, it also affects your concentration and you will not be able to focus on the regular tasks. These initial signs of insomnia lead to additional concerns, which include depression, stress, etc. Lack of sleep for several days may cause severe depression. Any disturbance in the daily activities or routines caused to sleep deprivation can be counted as the signs of insomnia.

The disruption in the routines can lead to severe problems. For instance, lack of focus when you drive the car or drowsy driving. Alarmingly, around 20 percent of the severe car accidents are caused due to drowsy driving.

How long the signs of insomnia last?

Insomnia can be a short term or long term disorder, which is termed as acute and chronic insomnia respectively. In case of acute insomnia, you may experience the signs of insomnia for a few days. Generally, acute insomnia is the outcome of work pressure, family problems, short term financial worry, etc.

If the signs of insomnia trouble you more than a month, where you are almost deprived of sleep for several days, it may lead to chronic insomnia. Unfortunately, the symptoms or signs of chronic insomnia are always secondary and it merely acts as a symptom of other underlying health condition. Sometimes, you may experience the signs of insomnia due to intake of certain medications.
